Warning — Loaded Questions Ahead!
- Are you comfortable with the way things are — playing it safe from day to day?
- Or are you really uncomfortable, but trembling at the thought of scary change?
There is nothing wrong with taking the safe path — you won’t disappear in a puff of smoke. But, the scary stuff may be denying your business potential that could be more fulfilling and profitable to you.
Hiding behind “What happens will happen.”
Stop denying customers the use of your product or service because they aren’t right in front of you. Waiting for something good to happen is the same as letting anything happen. Letting things ‘just happen’ to you is a dangerous risk which is most likely the thing scaring you out of building more business. The greatest risk is to your prospective customers/clients because they miss out on your product! Even a soft entry level plan is better than the ‘happen plan.’ If you’re hiding what you have behind the curtains of ‘happenstance’, now is the time to stop dreaming about customers and move your business into useful! Before you know it, you’ve moved the safe boundary into a more profitable zone with happy customers. Safety is still there, no longer holding you back.
You are the starter — you are the only real source letting people learn about you. Service is a place to build a foundation of consumer trust whether the product is a tiny mechanical tool or lofty technical skill or sound mentoring/coaching. Consumers of any of these things and all in=between crave EXCELLENT customer service. The tiniest tool and the most dedicated mentor can break; what is your plan for repair and continuity when that happens? How much does your customer/client suffer? Good customer service BEFORE the customers are in the complaint line. It starts when you act to respect the value of the people who are looking for you and your product. And have a plan to preserve their interest.
Ducking in the Presence of Bigger—BETTER
Are you intimidated by others who seem to be more skilled, therefore BETTER than you? It is easy to forget, in the face of perceived inadequacy, there will always be someone bigger, faster, but not necessarily BETTER. Intimidation like this is an evil of our own making. If you are determined to recognize those bigger, faster people, then decide how you will compete. As part of that excellent product and customer service mentioned earlier, you can expand your own skills to benefit customers. There are always customers who do not yet require the top skills to meet their needs. Look for people to partner with as you both grow. You may notice those who are bigger, better and faster, but you don’t have to let the difference become a distraction to the way you offer your product or service. It just isn’t that kind of competition. Let them be where they are and concentrate on working wisely and well where you are at the moment. Gradual growth permits you to maintain that comfort of safety in your decisions.
THINK, Don’t sink!
Moving the safety line isn’t the same as dumping it impulsively. Staying safe while realizing the potential for your business can be a reality. Your business potential model can become that reality when you move it out of the fantasy path into the goal path.
